Posting Description: Full-time Occupational Therapist-Pediatric Rehabilition Department-Sparrow Health System
Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform occupational therapy patient evaluations based upon the written prescription of the referring physician.
Communicate the treatment plan, treatment goals, and progress toward goals to the patient and/or caregivers.
Provide occupational therapy interventions according to the established plan.
Instruct patients and/or caregivers in home programs.
Perform medical record documentation according to established department criteria.
Communicate with other health care professionals, including patient referral sources, both verbally and in writing, according to established criteria.
Re-evaluate patients, modify treatment programs and goals as needed, and make recommendations at the time of discharge.
Supervise the activities of students and volunteers.
Cooperate with support staff and other health system departments in order to maximize the efficiency of non-clinical services such as the registering, scheduling, and billing of our patients.
Serves as a role model for consistent demonstration of Sparrow Health System Customer service Behavioral Standards of Performance, by respecting the privacy and confidentiality of those we serve.
Demonstrates knowledge and respects patient, service provider, organizational confidentiality procedures and protocols defined under the HIPAA Privacy Policies.
Follows established HIPAA privacy procedures when using and/or disclosing protected health information.
Maintains and protects patients rights under the HIPAA Privacy Standards. Demonstrates ICARE (behavioral) values, cooperation and positive interpersonal relations when interacting with all persons within the hospital environment and community.
Working Conditions:
Minimal to moderate amounts of lifting up to 50 pounds.
Able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients services in his/her assigned area as related to the principle duties and responsibilities of the position. The skills and knowledge needed to provide such care may be gained through education, training and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Required:
Three years of independant Pediatric Rehab experience as an Occupational Therapist.
Graduate of an accredited school of Occupational Therapy.
State of Michigan Occupational Therapist license.
Effective written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
Ability to perform multiple tasks and adapt to changing work situations are required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Preferred:
1. Demonstrated knowledge of insurance processes for pediatric rehab therapy.
2. Five or more years of independant Pediatric Rehabilitation experience as an Occupational Therapist.

Below is the basic job description:
POSITION SUMMARY:
Evaluates patients and develops occupational therapy treatment programs in collaboration
with the CMHSP and provides occupational therapy treatments to patients.
Administers complex active and passive therapeutic exercise, ADL training, and various
cognitive techniques with special focus on sensory processing issues that impact daily
life for individuals served by the agencies throughout the region. Instructs, motivates
and assists patients in learning and improving activities of daily living.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES FOR POSITION:
1. Initial and interim assessment of the client’s level of functioning and recommends,
in writing to the CMHSP, the need for a habilitation program, either restorative or maintenance, goals and
discharge plans.
2. Responsible for the establishment and ongoing evaluation of treatment programs, plan of
care, goals and discharge plans for the patients as related to Occupational Therapy needs in
conjunction with the CMHSP's treatment team.
3. Makes revisions to the plans and goals based on changes in patient status.
4. Implements the plan of treatment for patients within their home and community.
5. Completes and submits required documentation within established agency guidelines.
6. Facilitates effective communication amongst other clinicians providing care to the
patient within the CMHSP's treatment team.
7. Provides direct patient care services to ensure the effectiveness of Occupational Therapy programs.
8. Prioritizes, plans treatment and travel times to provide for maximum efficiency, yet meet the needs
of the patients
9. Demonstrates knowledge of Occupational Therapy procedures and equipment providing for safety and maximum
patient benefit.
10. Demonstrates therapy for the CLS staff, family members or other responsible persons who may assist the
patient with occupational therapy program.
11. Performs appropriate & timely documentation to maintain the standards set by the CMHSP.
12. Monitors visit frequency and duration by reviewing physicians’ orders and comparing to the plan of care and
documentation.
13. Acts as a referral source for staff, families, physicians on services and equipment related to habilitation
services.
14. Performs client/family education as appropriate

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
1. Degree in Occupational Therapy.
2. Current license / registration by state of hire as an Occupational Therapist
3. Five (5) years of experience in Occupational Therapy with at least three (3) years of experience
with sensory processing issues with individuals with developmental disabilities and emotional disturbances.
4. One (1) year of experience working in a community mental health environment.
PERSONAL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Pass a physical examination after being offered employment and a health assessment annually thereafter.
2. Able to lift up to 50 pounds, perform one person transfer under routine and emergency situations,
reposition a bedbound patient alone and able to sit, stand, bend stoop, kneel, pull, climb, reach, lift,
and perform repetitive movements of the upper extremities,
3. May be exposed to unsanitary conditions in some home settings,
4. May be exposed to high crime areas within the service community.
5. Endure exposure to weather and temperature extremes,
6. Must be able to travel.
