Event Information: Collaborating for Student Success in School
Presented by: Barbara Hanft MA, OTR, FAOTA
It is widely accepted that collaboration between physical and occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, teachers and parents is a valuable part of school-based therapy for students with disabilities. Yet, direct service to students in 1:1 sessions in therapy rooms is still considered the "gold standard" by many families, teachers and even therapists.
Rather than choose between direct or consultative service for each student for an entire school year, education teams must collaborate and learn to blend hands-on services with team and system supports. A collaborative approach to providing related services is focused on assisting students with disabilities to achieve their IEP goals and participate in the general education curriculum with their peers in all school spaces and places the classroom, cafeteria, gymnasium, hallways, library and music room.
