Sensory Integration and Self Regulation in Early Intervention and Preschool

Course Description:

This two-day workshop is designed for a multidisciplinary audience of professionals knowledgeable about child development. It is appropriate for professionals at all levels of experience from those unfamiliar with sensory integration to those experienced with sensory integration intervention with older children.

The content will build on participant’s understanding of development, sensory integration theory, sensory processing disorder, and infant mental health. A model of diagnostic understanding and clinical reasoning will be utilized to understand sensory-based self-regulation in infants and young children with and without disabilities. Understanding the contributions of child development, individual differences, goodness of fit between children and their physical and social environments, and behavioral expression of challenges in self-regulation will be used as a frame for planning and implementing intervention. Methods of clinical reasoning and practical suggestions for thoughtfully planned home and center-based session will be discussed. Strategies to help parents and other professionals understand sensory processing disorders will be discussed and illustrated with case studies.
